Beyond climbing, Cave Boulder includes areas for general and special physical training, as well as a studio for yoga and group fitness classes under its “Cave Fitness” program, which encompasses FYSM yoga, Hatha yoga, stretching, and antigravity sessions.

Skala Boulder

One of the most popular climbing gyms in Almaty is located in the Sport Palace, right next to the Baykonur subway station. Its central location makes it very convenient to reach.

As the name suggests, this gym doesn’t have lead climbing walls, but it offers two separate rooms with bouldering walls. This is where most of Almaty’s climbing community trains, making it the perfect place to meet new people and make friends. Many climbers and staff members speak English, and the friendly, supportive atmosphere ensures you’ll feel welcome.

The gym features walls with a wide variety of angles, from slabs to steep overhangs, catering to climbers of all preferences. It also includes a MoonBoard, offering a great routes database if you’re looking for a fresh challenge beyond the gym’s standard routes.

Skala

This large climbing gym is located in the upper part of the city. While it’s not the most convenient to reach, which makes it less popular among local climbers, it offers both a lead wall and a bouldering zone. Currently, it’s the best spot for lead climbing in Almaty, though the bouldering area is relatively small.

It’s best to visit this gym with a climbing partner, as many people there train in groups with a coach, primarily on top rope. The chances of finding a climbing partner on-site are fairly low.

If you don’t have your own rope, no worries—you can rent one at the gym.

Cozy Rock

This is a small bouldering gym located in a residential area near Sayran subway station. While the gym is quite small and doesn’t have room for many climbers, it’s worth checking out for its unique feature: a Kilter Board.

Like the MoonBoard, the Kilter Board is a training wall that allows climbers to tackle routes set by climbers worldwide. The key difference is that the Kilter Board lets you adjust its angle, offering greater flexibility and access to beginner-friendly routes, making it more versatile than the MoonBoard. Shabyt

Shabyt is an open-air lead wall located in the Central Recreation Park of Almaty. It operates only during the summer and is rarely visited by the local climbing community. Because of this, it’s unlikely to find a climbing partner on-site, so it’s best to visit with a friend.

Originally built for competitions, the wall is quite overhanging, and the routes are challenging. Grades start at 6b, making it unsuitable for novices but ideal for experienced climbers looking for more demanding climbs. If this grade suits your abilities, it’s worth visiting at least once. The setting is spectacular, and you can end your session with a stroll through the park and some ice cream.

Ropes and belay devices are available for rent, but you’ll need to bring the rest of your gear with you.
